Sweet Corn Flowers

Sweet corn flowers
Corn is monoecious, meaning that it contains both male (tassel) and female (ear) flowers on each plant.
What is the flower of sweet corn?
Look closely to see the pollen floating from the maize plant. The tassels on a maize plant are actually its flowers!
Should I cut the tassels off my corn?
The topping of plants is for seed corn production. The tassels are removed so that plants can only be pollinated by other plants. The rows that are topped are females rows.
Why does my corn have flowers?
In corn, flowering is identified by the development of tassel (male) and ear (female). Unlike most other field crops, corn is monoecious plant, i.e. two separate flower parts on the same plant. The role of tassel is to produce enough pollen to fertilize ovules in the female flower or ear.
